Rahu Kaal is the daily period ruled by Rahu, the north lunar node. It is the single most widely observed inauspicious window in everyday Hindu practice — far more people avoid Rahu Kaal than consult a full muhurat. New ventures, travel, purchases, signing agreements and auspicious ceremonies are traditionally kept outside it. Work already in progress is not affected; it is beginnings that are avoided.
How Rahu Kaal is calculated
The daylight period is divided into eight equal parts. The first part is never Rahu Kaal on any day. The part that carries Rahu follows a fixed weekday order — Monday takes the second part, Saturday the third, Friday the fourth, Wednesday the fifth, Thursday the sixth, Tuesday the seventh and Sunday the eighth. Because the parts are fractions of the actual daylight length, Rahu Kaal is longer in summer than in winter and differs between cities on the same date.
Gulik Kaal and Yamaganda
Two further inauspicious periods are derived the same way. Gulik Kaal (also called Mandi, ruled by a son of Saturn) is generally considered less severe than Rahu Kaal and is even held favourable for a few specific purposes in some traditions.
